Vaccination

🩺 Vaccination Guide for Sphynx Kittens

Sphynx kittens require a series of essential vaccinations during their early months to protect them from common, and potentially life-threatening, infectious diseases. Below is a comprehensive overview of the core and recommended vaccines to help your kitten thrive.

1. FVRCP Vaccine (Core Vaccine)

This combination vaccine protects against three major feline diseases:

  • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR):
Caused by the feline herpesvirus, this highly contagious respiratory infection leads to sneezing, nasal discharge, and eye inflammation. Vaccination helps prevent flare-ups and severe symptoms.

  • Feline Calicivirus (FCV):
Another respiratory virus that can also cause painful ulcers in the mouth. Vaccination reduces both the severity and spread, especially in homes with multiple cats.

  • Feline Panleukopenia (FP):
Also known as feline distemper, this dangerous virus attacks the immune system and causes vomiting, diarrhea, and extreme lethargy. It is often fatal in kittens, making vaccination absolutely critical.

2. Rabies Vaccine (Core Vaccine)

Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system, and can be transmitted to humans. It’s legally required in many areas and considered a core vaccine for all cats, including Sphynx.

  • Timing: Given at 12 to 16 weeks of age

  • Boosters: Every 1 to 3 years, depending on the vaccine used and local regulations

3. Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) Vaccine (Recommended)

FeLV is a contagious virus that suppresses the immune system and increases cancer risk. It’s highly recommended for Sphynx kittens that:

  • Go outdoors

  • Live with other cats

  • May be exposed to unfamiliar felines

Important: Kittens should be tested for FeLV before vaccination, as the vaccine is not effective in already-infected cats.

  • Initial Dose: 8–12 weeks

  • Booster: 3–4 weeks later

4. Chlamydia Vaccine (Optional)

Chlamydia psittaci can cause conjunctivitis and respiratory symptoms. This vaccine is typically only recommended in catteries, shelters, or large multi-cat households.
